Standing at the Top of Murchison Falls: Uganda’s Most Powerful Natural Wonder

Travelers at the railing of a viewpoint at the top of Murchison Falls, watching the River Nile rush through the gorge in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.

There are few places in Africa where you can feel nature’s power as closely as you can at the top of Murchison Falls. Lean on the railing, and the River Nile thunders past just below you. You feel the spray on your face, the ground hums beneath your feet, and the roar drowns out every other sound. It is one of the highlights of any Uganda safari, and a moment our guests talk about long after they return home.

Where the Nile Squeezes Through Rock

Murchison Falls sits in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area. Here the world’s longest river forces its way through a gorge only about seven meters wide before plunging 43 meters into the pool below. Squeezing that much water through such a narrow gap makes this one of the most powerful waterfalls on earth. From the viewing points at the top, you can watch the water explode into white foam and mist that drifts up over the surrounding forest. On sunny mornings, the spray often catches the light and forms rainbows over the gorge.

How to Experience the Falls

There are two ways to see Murchison Falls, and we recommend doing both:

  • From below, by boat. The afternoon boat cruise up the Nile takes you toward the base of the falls. Along the way you will pass hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants drinking at the water’s edge and a wide variety of birds, possibly including the rare shoebill.
  • From above, on foot. A short hike leads to the top of the falls, where viewing platforms like the one in this photo bring you right to the edge of the gorge. Some travelers get dropped off by boat at the bottom and hike up, which is an unforgettable way to combine both perspectives.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Bring a waterproof cover for your phone and camera. The spray can be heavy, especially in the rainy season.
  • Wear good walking shoes. The trails are rocky and can be slippery near the viewpoints.
  • Pack binoculars. The forest and riverbanks around the falls are rich in birdlife.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light, cooler temperatures and the best photographs.
  • Stay behind the railings. The current here is extremely powerful, so always follow your guide’s instructions.

More Than a Waterfall

A visit to the falls is just one part of a Murchison Falls safari. The park is home to lions, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and hundreds of bird species. Game drives on the northern savannah, a sunrise drive toward Lake Albert and a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way from Kampala make for a well-rounded adventure. Families and first-time safari travelers especially enjoy it.
